If a portion of the tooth has broken off, try to locate and collect the broken piece. Handle it carefully by the crown (top) and avoid touching the root. Rinse the broken tooth fragment and your mouth gently with lukewarm water to remove any dirt or debris. If there is bleeding from the broken tooth or surrounding gum tissue, use a clean piece of gauze or a clean cloth to apply gentle pressure to the area for about 10 minutes until bleeding stops. Over-the-counter pain relievers, like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help alleviate pain. Follow the recommended dosage instructions. Contact a dentist immediately to schedule an emergency dental appointment. Bring the collected broken tooth fragment with you, as the dentist may be able to reattach it. Pick up the knocked-out tooth by the crown (top) only. Do not touch the root, as this can damage the delicate cells necessary for reattachment. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with lukewarm water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrub or use soap. Time is crucial. Contact a dentist or emergency dental clinic immediately and explain the situation. Get to the dentist's office as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes to an hour, for the best chance of saving the tooth.
