A dental abscess is a painful and potentially serious oral health condition characterized by a pocket of pus that forms within or around a tooth. It typically results from a bacterial infection, often stemming from a dental cavity (tooth decay), gum disease, or a cracked or fractured tooth. Dental abscesses require prompt dental treatment to prevent complications. This type of abscess forms at the tip of the tooth's root, usually as a result of untreated tooth decay that has reached the pulp (the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels). Periapical abscesses can also occur due to trauma to the tooth. Periodontal abscesses occur in the gum tissue, often near the root of a tooth. They are typically associated with advanced gum disease (periodontitis) and result from an infection that spreads from the gums into the supporting bone. Gingival abscesses are the least severe type of dental abscess and involve only the gum tissue, not the tooth or its root. These abscesses can develop due to injury or foreign objects irritating the gum, such as food particles or dental appliances.
