Dry Mouth

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a condition characterized by a lack of sufficient saliva in the mouth. Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by helping with digestion, preventing tooth decay, and keeping the mouth moist and comfortable. When there isn't enough saliva, it can lead to various problems and discomfort.  Dry mouth is a common side effect of many prescription and over-the-counter medications, including antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, and certain blood pressure medications. Certain medical conditions, such as Sjögren's syndrome, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and autoimmune diseases, can lead to dry mouth. Individuals who have undergone radiation therapy to the head and neck may experience damage to salivary glands, resulting in dry mouth. Not drinking enough water can lead to temporary dry mouth. Injury or surgery that affects the nerves controlling saliva production can cause dry mouth. Tobacco use can reduce saliva production and worsen dry mouth.
