Enamel erosion is a dental condition characterized by the gradual wearing away of the outer layer of the teeth, known as enamel. Enamel is the hard, protective covering that shields the sensitive inner layers of the teeth, including dentin and pulp. This erosion occurs when acids, often from certain foods and beverages, as well as stomach acids in cases of acid reflux, consistently come into contact with the teeth. These acids can weaken and erode the enamel, leading to various dental issues.
