Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and conditions related to the dental pulp and the surrounding tissues of the tooth. One of the primary procedures performed in endodontics is root canal treatment. Inside each tooth, there is a soft tissue called the dental pulp. The dental pulp consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. The dental pulp extends into the root canals, which are narrow channels that run from the pulp chamber to the tip of the tooth roots. Root canal treatment is necessary when the dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, trauma, cracks or chips in the tooth, repeated dental procedures, or gum disease. If left untreated, an infected or inflamed dental pulp can lead to severe pain, abscess formation, and the potential loss of the tooth. Root canal treatment involves the removal of the diseased or damaged dental pulp from the tooth. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia to ensure comfort. The dentist or endodontist will create an access point in the tooth, remove the infected pulp, clean and shape the root canals, and then fill them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The tooth is then sealed with a filling or crown to restore its functionality and protect it from further damage. Root canal treatment aims to save the natural tooth and alleviate pain and discomfort associated with dental pulp infection or inflammation. By removing the infected tissue and sealing the root canals, the tooth can be restored to its normal function, appearance, and stability.
