Gingival

"Gingival" refers to anything related to the gums in the mouth. The term "gingiva" (plural: "gingivae") is the clinical and anatomical term for the gums, which are the soft tissues that surround and support the teeth within the mouth. The gums play a crucial role in oral health, providing a protective barrier for the tooth roots and helping to anchor teeth in place. Maintaining healthy gums is essential for overall oral health. Proper oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, can help prevent gum diseases and other oral issues. Gingivitis is a common gum disease characterized by inflammation of the gums. It is typically caused by the accumulation of plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—on the teeth and gums. Symptoms of gingivitis include redness, swelling, tenderness, and sometimes bleeding of the gums, especially during brushing or flossing. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to a more serious condition known as periodontitis. Periodontitis involves inflammation and infection not only in the gums but also in the supporting structures of the teeth, including the bone. This can lead to gum recession, deep pockets forming between the teeth and gums, and potential tooth loss. Gum recession refers to the process where the gum tissue starts to pull away from the tooth, exposing the tooth root. This can result from factors such as aggressive brushing, gum disease, or other underlying dental issues. Research has shown a link between gum health and overall systemic health. Poor gum health and gum diseases have been associated with conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory problems. Maintaining healthy gums is not only important for oral health but can also contribute to overall well-being.
