Oral Herpes

Oral herpes, also known as herpes labialis or cold sores, is a common viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2. While HSV-1 is primarily associated with oral herpes, it can also cause genital herpes through oral-genital contact. Oral herpes is highly contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected person's saliva, such as kissing, sharing utensils or drinks, or engaging in oral sex with someone who has genital herpes. Oral herpes typically causes the development of small, fluid-filled blisters or sores on or around the lips, mouth, or gums. These sores are often painful and can be accompanied by itching, burning, or tingling sensations. Other symptoms may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and general discomfort during outbreaks. Once a person is infected with HSV-1, the virus remains in the body for life. It can become dormant or latent and reactivate periodically, leading to recurrent outbreaks of oral herpes. Outbreak triggers may include stress, illness, exposure to sunlight, hormonal changes, or a weakened immune system.
