Periapical Abscess

A periapical abscess, also known as a dental abscess or tooth abscess, is a painful collection of pus that forms at the root of a tooth. It typically occurs as a result of a bacterial infection that enters the dental pulp (the innermost part of the tooth), often through a cavity or crack in the tooth. The dental pulp contains nerves and blood vessels, and when it becomes infected, it can lead to severe pain and swelling. To relieve pain and pressure, the abscess may need to be drained by making a small incision in the gum tissue or through a root canal procedure. Antibiotics may be prescribed to help control the infection and prevent it from spreading. In cases where the dental pulp is infected, a root canal procedure may be necessary to remove the infected pulp, clean the root canals, and seal the tooth to prevent further infection. In some severe cases, if the tooth is extensively damaged or the infection is not treatable, the tooth may need to be extracted.
