A periodontal abscess, commonly referred to as a gum abscess, is a localized infection within the gums and surrounding tissues. It typically occurs as a result of untreated gum disease (periodontitis) or as a complication of poor dental hygiene. The abscess forms when bacteria invade the space between the tooth and the gums, causing inflammation, swelling, and the accumulation of pus. This can lead to throbbing pain, tenderness, redness, and sometimes even the development of a pimple-like bump on the gums that may rupture and release pus. If left untreated, a periodontal abscess can cause damage to the underlying bone and surrounding teeth. Treatment usually involves draining the abscess, cleaning the area thoroughly, and addressing the underlying cause through improved oral hygiene practices and, if necessary, more extensive dental procedures.
