Receding gums, also known as gingival recession, is a condition where the gum tissue surrounding the teeth starts to pull back or wear away, exposing more of the tooth's surface or even the tooth's root. Receding gums can lead to tooth sensitivity, increased risk of decay, and aesthetic concerns. The most common cause of gum recession is gum disease, which leads to inflammation and damage to the supporting tissues of the teeth. Brushing your teeth too vigorously or using a toothbrush with hard bristles can damage the gum tissue and lead to recession over time. Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to the buildup of plaque and tartar, which can cause gum disease and subsequent recession. Some individuals are more prone to gum recession due to their genetic makeup. Grinding or clenching your teeth can put excessive force on the gums and lead to recession. Crooked or misaligned teeth can cause uneven pressure on the gums, leading to recession. Smoking or chewing tobacco can contribute to gum recession. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause, can make the gums more sensitive and prone to recession.
