Receding gums, also known as gingival recession, is a condition where the gum tissue that surrounds and protects the teeth gradually wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth's root. This can lead to a range of dental issues and aesthetic concerns. The primary cause of receding gums is gum disease (periodontal disease), which results from the accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth, causing inflammation and damage to the gum tissue. However, other factors like aggressive tooth brushing, genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, tobacco use, and certain medical conditions can contribute to gum recession as well.
